Houston Astros players and students help clients at Volunteers of America’s new Life Enrichment Center
Houston – Major Leaguer Cory Sullivan of the Houston Astros and high school student leaders from the Houston and Dallas Action Teams® stepped up to the plate to serve intellectually disabled adults at the Volunteers of America Life Enrichment Center in northwest Houston on June 19.
Clients at Volunteers of America’s new Life Enrichment Center (LEC), which provides social activities and other services to intellectually disabled adults in northwest Houston. The Life Enrichment Center helps fill the gaps in services for adults with special needs in the Houston area by providing clients with independent living skills, art therapy, music, fitness and other training opportunities, in addition to a welcoming place to interact socially with others. The LEC also plans to start offering respite services in the fall.
The ballplayers and youth volunteers will serve lunch, help with arts and crafts instruction and lead a video exercise class for those who visit the center each day. Volunteers of America was able to open the new LEC in Houston because of a generous grant from the Major League Baseball Players Trust. This is the second center of its kind Volunteers of America has opened in the state of Texas.
Administered by Volunteers of America and the Major League Baseball Players Trust, the Action Team program encourages young people throughout the United States to volunteer in their communities.
