The Home Depot Foundation Pledges $30 Million to Veterans Housing Issues
Volunteers of America, one of the largest nonprofit providers of affordable housing and services to veterans in the U.S., has partnered with The Home Depot Foundation to provide quality homes to veterans and their families nationwide. Here in Texas, The Home Depot Foundation has committed $50,000 this year to help with the construction of planned veterans’ housing in Houston. This facility, located at Volunteers of America’s existing McGovern-Lavender Residential Treatment Program campus, will focus specifically on the unique needs of women veterans.
Michael King Named New National President and CEO
Michael ("Mike") King has been named national president and chief executive officer. He will lead the 114 year-old faith-based organization as it continues to expand its existing services to needy Americans while also implementing a new strategy focused on innovative services for older people.
Astros Go To Bat for VOATX
Major Leaguer Cory Sullivan of the Houston Astros and high school student leaders from the Houston and Dallas Action Teams® stepped up to the plate to serve intellectually disabled adults at the Volunteers of America Life Enrichment Center in northwest Houston on June 19.
Houston VOA Awarded Second Chance Mentoring Grant
VOA-Houston is proud to be the only awardee in Texas of the first round of Second Chance Act mentoring funds from the Office of Justice Programs. The grant will be used to mentor mothers who are incarcerated at the Harris County WHO-Atascocita women’s correctional facility.
Houston Empowerment Center Gets a Facelift from Exxon Mobil Volunteers
ExxonMobil volunteers came out in force during National Volunteer week to help Volunteers of America Texas beautify the facilities and brighten the lives of those we serve. At the Community Empowerment Center, volunteers painted the large activity room and cleared out the outdoor space where our ADA accessible garden for consumers with disabilities will be built. At the McGovern Campus for Women and Families, volunteers painted and decorated the women’s group room, re-did bathrooms, landscaped and put in a new vegetable garden
