Children and Youth Services promote healthy development of children, adolescents, and their families through prevention and intervention services. Community-based programs for at-risk children collaborate with schools, religious organizations, and other social service agencies.
CAN-DO (Community and Neighborhood Drug Offensive)
This program works extensively with school-aged children to increase awareness of the dangers of drug use. Games like "Situation Bingo", songs, and puppet shows are examples of the fun and loving environment children learn self esteem and good life choices.
Foster Teen Mentoring
Mentors partner with teens who are nearing emancipation from the foster care system. Preparation for Adult Living (PAL) teaches the teens basic skills for life on their own. Balancing a checkbook, meal planning, how to apply for utility services, and budgeting are just some of the topics. Assistance with college applications, job training, rent, and utilities is part of the continuum of care bringing foster teens into adulthood.
Operation Jumpstart
In July/August Volunteers of America Texas sponsors a school supply drive to help at-risk students get a "jump start" on the new school year. Backpacks, notebooks, crayons, rulers, markers and other school supplies are provided by shoppers and other community members who want to support students and education.
