Operation Backpack (Houston)

Operation Backpack 2020 was a unique event offering a curbside pick-up to keep staff and clients safe during these unprecedented times of the COVID-19 pandemic. Volunteers of America Texas served more than 100 families providing school essentials and personal protection equipment for children.

One of our dynamic participants, Brittany J., came to acquire much needed supplies for her school aged children. She earned her certification as a Nursing Assistant through the VOA Texas Health Professions Opportunity Grant. Brittany has overcome many obstacles to obtain her certification. When she came to VOA Texas, Brittany was homeless and didn’t have a solid plan to get her life back on track. Through perseverance and a comprehensive plan, the staff at the VOA Texas Financial Opportunity Center helped Brittany find employment and resources to assist with housing.

After everything she has encountered, life took a drastic turn earlier this year with the loss of her Mother due to COVID-19. Brittany needed all the help she could receive with becoming a surrogate Mother to her six-year-old brother. The staff at VOA Texas in Houston made it their mission to assist her and her brother with as many resources to ensure she is stable and maintain all she has accomplished. Staff were able to provide school uniforms, personal protection equipment i.e. hand-sanitizer and mask, and access to the internet for virtual learning.

The funding VOA Texas has received through Niagara Bottling's Niagara Cares fund allows us to support families like Brittany with bare essentials when facing life-altering challenges.
