Mardi Bras

Providing restoration through the gift of dignity items for women in need.

Volunteers of America Texas is a Ministry of Service dedicated to helping the vulnerable to reach their full potential. VOA Texas serves more than 24,000 individuals and families each year by providing a better quality of life for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, fostering independence for seniors, serving homeless veterans, providing job training to low in-come individuals and second chances to people re-entering society from prison.

Our re-entry programs benefit more than 1,500 people, nearly half are women. When a woman is released from prison, they leave without personal dignity items (bras, underwear, pads, tampons and bus passes) that help them transition to live outside of the prison walls. Having these items make a difference in a woman's confidence and ability to harness her power and reclaim her life.

"Most of us come with what’s only in our locker. Usually that’s not a lot. You start to wonder a little bit about how you’re going to take care of basic hygiene needs. Knowing that everything from shampoo, conditioner, soap, deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrush and the unmentionables were taken care of, was a big relief.”
